The Five Year Goal: To enjoy climbing as much or more then I do now, and climb as much as I can on everything I can.
The Insider:
Consider the badger; a robust and stocky animal with massive shoulder and neck muscles which allow it to dig as fast as a bulldozer. Though the animal is often characterized by a quiet nature, and does not seem terrifying, the historical record provides evidence of an early species of badgers defeating much larger predators such as the bear and the mammoth when cornered.
This is Ian Irving. Some perceive him as a shy, friendly, and thoughtful individual, which he is, but if you look at his climbing, you'll understand there is a bold, determined, incredibly hard-working force beneath that as well. Ian constantly climbs inches, sometimes feet taller than his stature. He does so with an animated style, channeling that inner force into insane lock-off.
Ian is one of those guys you envy because he was dispatching V8 before he knew what a drop-knee was. He has incredible raw talent and technique, but more than that, he has a calm and concentrated belief in himself combined with an impassioned drive to send hard. He is also humbly content to simply be challenging himself all the time, regardless of grade or competition - a trait we could all work harder at.
So look out for Ian Irving. If you hear him in the woods, you may be deceived for a moment by the try hard shrill of a large, very upset elephant - but you will soon realize you are in fact approaching a subtle and calm, but lively and tenacious badger who couldn't be more psyched on climbing.
