Let’s see: Bouldering? Check. Lead climbing? Check. Top ropes? Check. Now, how many different sick angles and degrees of overhanging goodness can you count? Forget it. Below: Hangar 18’s grand opening. There’s a new, big and badass boulder in town.

Where is it?
Hangar 18 Riverside is located at 6935 Arlington Ave. in Riverside, CA.

Directions?
We’re located between three different freeways, so take the 15 (exit Limonite), the 91 (exit Arlington) or the 60 (exit Van Buren) — all lead to “The Hangar.”

Tell us about it.
Our brand new Riverside facility is home to 12,000 square feet of insanely overhanging bouldering, 48 top ropes and lead routes, and some of the strongest climbers in California. With the help of gym builder extraordinaire Louie Anderson, our textured climbing terrain offers the simple and clean look of hold color-based setting. It helps that gym owner Zack Shields also runs Climb-It Holds, where his brother Tyler can custom pour any new hold in about an hour. Community is everything at Hangar 18 gyms, so grab your shoes and stop by for the burly setting, rockin’ BBQ’s, and guided trips to local outdoor hot spots.

Any standout features?
Our massive free-standing boulder has top out sections up to 20 feet high to get your blood pumping. With bold lines and strong features, the boulder provides professionally set problems (from V0 to V12+) that cater to all ages and skill levels.

Any comps?
We’re hosting the ABS Citizen’s Regional Comp on January 10th of 2009. While you wait, check out MEGACOMP IV at our Upland location (20 miles NW of Riverside) Saturday Nov. 22nd.

Age Requirements?
If you can fit in a harness, you can climb. We do require visitors to be 11 or older to belay or top out our colossal highball boulder.

Hours?
Mon-Thurs: 10am-10pm
Fri: 10am-9pm

What’s so good about the gym anyway?
Hangar’s floor plan provides a nice spacious feeling with plenty of people to climb and converse with. It also has events all month long - including ladies night, college night, movie night, guest dJs, and yoga twice a week.

Four words that best describes the gym.
Monumental. Dependable. Passionate. Burly.

When are the best sessions?
In the evenings, Monday through Thursday, when everyone’s crew crankin’ for first ascents.

Any inside info we should know about?
Hangar has a strong community of climbers that make you feel right at home by giving beta, safe belays, good spots or the low down on a local area. At Hangar, if your passionate about rock climbing, you’ll love it.

Rate the gym from 1 to 10 and why?
I’d give hangar a 9 - great staff, flawless climbing terrain, and a great community of climbers.
