Entourage #43 - October 2010

If anyone is looking to hire a climber with a Ph.D. in economics, then Steve Maisch, 38, is your guy. He doesn’t expect a huge salary, but he does require plenty of time off to climb all across the globe. His first foray into climbing was in 1992 when a friend took him to Donner Summit, Lake Tahoe, California. He impressed himself by onsighting a 5.10c before his partner noted that the first 30 feet of the route was actually underneath the snow at their feet. He calls his climbing career “a struggle ever since; every time I break into a new grade, the climb gets down rated for some reason or another.” Perhaps that has led to Maisch’s semi-obsession with training. Lucky for him, his wife of seven years, Colour, puts up with him being a selfproclaimed training fanatic and constantly formulating training plans, one of which you can check out on page 68 in this issue’s extended Workshop. As he says, “If you’ve been climbing for a while, and you’re into it…then you should care about training.”

Even if you don't know Boulder-based Andy Mann, chances are you know exactly who Andy Mann is. As Urban Climber’s Senior Contributing Photographer and with seven UC covers under his belt, Mann is the go-to guy for climbing photography. Makes sense, seeing as he got his start tagging along with Keith Ladzinski, another well-known climbing photog. “I learned the ropes, met the players, and paid my dues,” he says. His newest self-assigned project is to take everyone’s portrait, in his words, “I mean, everyone I ever meet.” You can get a taste of that project on page 54 through the Real Grit feature, a small cross section of an ultimately huge portrait project. When he’s not photographing everyone he’s ever met, Mann, 30, is a highly talented guitarist, with a solo acoustic album coming out in early 2011. In that same musical vein, Mann has taken to shooting a lot of music photography, including artists like Phish, Michael Franti, and Darrell Scott. Not a bad life for the Virginia transplant.
