John Roark

John wants to apologize in advance for what you're about to read. "I like long walks on the beach, starry nights, and mostly making fun of 'boulderers'... though I probably have more hours a few feet off the ground than anywhere else." Laughs Roark. "Sorry, I'm poor, stuck in Florida and somewhat bitter." So what does he do to cure his ails? "I go to Europe; Climb a lot, drink a lot and get fit." In his most recent travels through Spain John spent some time in Barcelona where he documented an incredible climbing scene... in the streets of La Fouixarda. His photo essay, Barcelona Heights, paints a perfect picture of possibility when climbers are given the opportunity to inhabit discarded city space.

Jacquelyn Chiddo

Jacquelyn Chiddo recently moved to the apparent center of the universe, Boulder Colorado, to find that the climbing season is a lot shorter than expected being snowed in for most of the last month.  She has been climbing and training looking forward to her forthcoming migration to El Paso, Texas to enjoy the best that Hueco Tanks has to offer.  In preparation for this and in between writing for Urban Climber, she has been earning a living at the infamous 'Neptune's Mountaineering' where she is managing to sell a lot less than she probably should. In this issue Jackie interviews one of the most modern talents in the world of climbing - the young, unstoppable Tyler Landman.

Chris Brown

Below a notorious roof crack at Tennessee Wall, a camera lens tumbles down broken sandstone terraces to its final resting place at the base of a waterfall.

Spectators offer condolences to its owner, Chris Brown, a climber and photographer from Tampa, Florida.  Chris smiles pensively. Through this shattered lens, he has recorded Looking Glass dynos, Horse Pens heel hooks, and El Cap whippers.  It celebrated success and memorialized failure...But no longer.  Chris surfs down talus to retrieve the corpse, sheaths his camera body, and digs through his climbing pack.  Tying in, he remarks, "Don't worry, it's insured," and launches off into steep sandstone.  The scene is classic Chris Brown.  Equally adept behind the camera or on the sharp end, Chris always keeps busy at the crag.  When he's not road tripping, Chris enjoys surfing, skateboarding, and pioneering first ascents at home in Tampa, where he is also co- owner of the local climbing gym, Vertical Ventures.

Clark Shelk

Clark wants to discuss a grave dilemma facing the people of Oregon and the NBA; the management of the Portland Trail Blazers. We've limited his word count... thank goodness: "Rasheed Wallace was traded to Detroit because of his 'behavior', only to win a Championship a few months later. Jermaine O'Neal, the only guy in the NBA with any anti- Shaq potential, was traded to Indiana, Portland kept a 40-year- old Lithuanian with bad knees at Center. Let's not forget the best one of all. In the 1985 Draft, the visionaries in the Blazer offices decided to pass on a kid from North Carolina by the name of Michael Jordan. These guys couldn't manage a Dairy Queen, much less a basketball team." There you have it. Aside from his part time gig ranting about the NBA, Clark is the man behind Revolution.
