In UC35, we announced the return of the Show Us Your Woody contest. Response was swift, with a dozen entries hitting our inboxes within days. Among the entries were outdoor woodies, recycled woodies, and just plain badass woodies . . . In the end, though, one wall stood out above the rest that of Ryan Spence, of Tacoma, Washington.
Spence’s home wall offers 400 square feet
of climbing surface, including 50-, 30-, and
15-degree walls. There are over 1,500 holds
in rotation, The woody room, a small garage,
contains hangboards, an adjustable crack
machine, system tiles, H.I.T. strips, gymnastic
rings, medicine balls, and free weights, and is
padded with Cordless Big Boy pads.
This wall was first erected in Tacoma, was
moved to Gig Harbor, Washington, and then
was shifted to Colorado. Now it’s back in
Tacoma. “Across the street from my favorite
bar,” explains Spence sounds like a
new drinking game in the making.
As our lucky winner, Ryan Spence will receive a set of The Force Crimps from the Detroit Rock Climbing Company. There are 10 of these dual-textured bad boys in a set, five hard and five easy. Will your home wall be next? Email pictures and the story behind your woody to word@urbanclimbermag.com.
