Access Fund TeamWorks Winners Announced
Each year The Access Fund (AF) awards a youth team and its coach for their stewardship and volunteer work at their community crags. In an effort to teach a younger generation about environment, access, and the impact they have as climbers, the AF offers a $1,000 grant to the team who accumulates the most hours of service in the outdoors.
The Access Fund announced Team Adrenaline along with Coach Trey Johanson- Smith from Suwanee, Georgia, as the TeamWorks winners for 2010. Team Adrenaline put 267 volunteers through 941 hours of work to conserve their local climbing areas. I was very proud of my kids [after learning of their win], Johanson-Smith said. And, I was and am incredibly grateful to the A-Team parents who make our volunteer service a priority. They have other kids and other demands on their time, and there I am constantly after them to come out in the woods with me.
Team Adrenaline has about 40 kids from ages 7 to 17, has hosted four events, and participated in one more. The events included projects like defining trails to controlling erosion and cleaning up trash around climbing areas.
I dont think they really grasped how big of an accomplishment this was. We just did what we always do out there. This year we ended up winning, so in the end, winning the competition wasnt what mattered; it was having a blast every time we were out there working and climbing together, Johanson-Smith said. Last year Team Adrenaline got second place in the competition and had a clear goal for this years events. The grant was used to fund a clinic for the team by Arno Ilgner for his new book Espresso Lessons.
