Photos by Spenser Li - Mid-Atlantic climbing, in the Eastern US, isn't the most spectacular destination. In general, it's short and greasy, but it does offer good variety. The Shawangunks' steep, horizontal slots create a sport crag for trad climbers. If you turn the Gunks on its side, you get the towering flake of quartzite that is Seneca Rocks in West Virginia, complete with a seven foot by 30 foot wide summit ridge. The sandstone of the New River Gorge in West Virginia has a plethora of single pitch sport and trad lines. And finally, Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoahs of Virginia, has some gorgeous granite and classic cracks.
