A photographic journey around the world
Photos by David Balcells / canpirra.com - During the last five years I have enjoyed several climbing trips surrounded by good friends and with the camera always in hand. This gallery gathers the best pictures taken during these trips. The photos try to capture not only the bouldering action, but also the local culture and landscape in places like: Albarracin, Spain; Fontainebleau, France; Sukothai, Thailand; Bishop, California; Hampi, India and more.

Escape from New York - Part 3 - Photo Gallery
Photos by Andrew Chasteen / andrewchasteen.com - We headed due west towards Oklahoma City, where our good friend and professional photographer Andy Chasteen had kindly promised to take us in and show us around his home turf, the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. We had decided to forgo what would surely be the crowded boulders of Hueco Tanks (and 20 hours of Texas highways) for the less traveled ground of the Refuge. According to the official website, the Refuge is made up of nearly 70,000 acres of mixed grass prairie, which means it looks much the same way the whole great plains region used to look before farmers moved in and started cultivating the land. Escape from New York - Part 2 - Photo Gallery
Photos by Kevin Riley and Meredith Rike - We had been in Tennessee for several days at this point, exploring the many varied ways to climb rock in the Chattanooga area. After our day bouldering at Little Rock City and a much needed rest day, we headed straight out to the Tennessee Wall. The T-Wall is a convenient 30 minutes or so from Chattanooga, but far enough outside the city to feel remote. It features gorgeous views of the Tennessee River Gorge from the base of the crag, and even better views when you get up on a route. Read Part 1, Read Part 2, Read Part 3, Read part 4
Escape from New York - Part 1 - Photo Gallery
Photos by Kevin Riley and Meredith Rike - My boyfriend and I were your typical young "urban climbers", more or less: living in Brooklyn, working in Manhattan, staying out too late on the weekends and trying to catch as many hours outdoors at the crag as we could. Nevertheless, we were never really that satisfied. One day, as we sat rehashing all the unpleasant details of our respective days (pushy commuters, long work hours, train problems, etc.), I had an idea: why didn’t we leave? Dynamic Bouldering at ABS 10
The problems were creative and the athletes moved like monkeys at this years American Bouldering Series National Championships on February 13-15, 2009 at The Spot Bouldering Gym in Boulder, Colorado. In its 10th season, ABS routesetting is definitely world-class. In fact, finalist Max Zolotukhin called the four men's and four women's lines "the best problems in a comp ever." The routesetting team, headed by Kynan Waggoner, added an eight-foot plywood extension to the back wall for some serious highball action. The top three male and female winners in this event will represent the United States at this years Bouldering World Cup, hosted by the Teva Mountain Games at Vail, Colorado June 4 to 7. Visit: USA Climbing and The Spot Gym for more info.
The 2009 Bouldering National Championships
Photos by Steve Woods / woodsfamilyclimbs.com - Daniel Woods and Alex Johnson won the adult Bouldering National Championship at the Spot gym in Boulder, competing in a field that included some international superstars of bouldering. Among the surprises: second place for Paul Robinson (a pleasant surprise because he suffered a broken ankle in October), and second place for the relatively unknown 16-year-old Chauncenia Cox from Colorado. See the full results and video of Daniel Woods and Alex Puccio at USAClimbing.net.
Tennessee Bouldering Authority Comp, Chattanooga TN
Photos by Sam Silvey / LookOutdoorNews.com - On Wednesday, February 4th, 2009, competitors and spectators alike came out in support of the 801RIVERFRONT fundraiser to try their hand on a new set of boulder problems. Plenty of Mr. T's Pizza and Signal Mountain's own 'French Broad Ale' kept everyone well fed and in good spirits. A great time was had by over thirty competitors, and a nice sum was raised to purchase climbing holds for the 801. Thanks to all who made this possible (Tommy Morrison, Kasia Pietras, and Jimmy Webb) and to all who participated! We look forward to seeing you at the next Local's Comp in March. El Potrero Chico, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
Photos by by Adam Bove / adambove.carbonmade.com - The winter paradise of Potrero Chico is located in the town of Hidalgo, about 30 minutes away from the massive city of Monterrey, Mexico, just a couple hours beyond the Texas border. The scene is small, relaxed and the limestone sport routes are plentiful. The cliffs vary from powerful, pocketed single-pitch to soaring, monster multi-pitch towers — containing a variety of slabs and overhanging walls for all abilities. The food is good, the people are amazing and the climbing is perfect. Shown in this gallery is a small collection of shots taken by Bove in December 2008.
The Special Sandstone in Arkansas
University of Arkansas student Alex Brady lives no more than two hours away from an immense amount of amazing sandstone. While the sport climbing in the area can be very good, it's not the main feature of the area. Shown in this gallery are photos from areas located in Northwest Arkansas like: Lake Lincoln, Area 74, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, the Desoto Boulders, the Ozark Bouldering Gym and at the 2008 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell competition.
