    Beautiful Yosemite Wall Free Climbed

    6/5/13 - Lucho Rivera and Cedar Wright have completed the first all-free ascent of the southwest face of Liberty Cap above Yosemite Valley. The two men redpointed the 16-pitch route, tentatively called Mahtah (the Native American name for Liberty Cap), on May 31, with Wright leading the majority of the crux pitches and Rivera following free.

    6/4/13 - Yosemite National Park saw another death on Sunday, June 2, after a dislodged rock hit a climber.

  • Access Fund, RRGCC Acquire 300 Undeveloped Acres in Kentucky

    6/3/13 - The Access Fund has acquired a 309-acre parcel of land in Beattyville, Kentucky, called the Miller Fork Recreational Preserve. Several miles of cliffs line the terrain; while some development has occurred, the majority of the rock is untouched.

    5/31/13- Czech climber Adam Ondra established a new 5.14d route, Illusionist, in Flatanger’s Hanshelleren cave during his trip to Norway this month.

  • Climbing Out of the Running for Olympic Games

    5/29/13 - The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that their recommendations for inclusion as possible sports into the 2020 Olympic Games would be baseball/softball, squash, and wrestling. Among those not included was sport climbing, karate, roller sports, wakeboarding, and wushu.

    Nico Favresse Establishes Hard Crack Climb in Norway

    5/28/13 - Belgian climber Nico Favresse made the first ascent of a project last week in Jossingfjord, Norway, called The Recovery Drink. While he hasn't yet attached a grade to it, he calls it "the hardest crack I have ever redpointed."

  • Climber Deaths in Yosemite, Tahquitz

    5/20/13 - A climber died Sunday after he fell climbing the Muir Wall (5.10 A2) on El Capitan. The Muir Wall is a 33-pitch line just left of the famed Nose.

  • National Park Service Authorizes Fixed Anchors in Wilderness

    5/17/13 - The National Park Service has released a decision regarding fixed anchors in Wilderness. The policy, called Director's Order #41, manages the use of fixed anchors in wilderness areas, including in major climbing areas like Yosemite, Grand Teton, Zion, Joshua Tree, and Canyonlands national parks.

  • Megos Repeats Corona (5.15a) in Frankenjura

    5/14/13 - The 19-year-old Alexander Megos has climbed Corona (5.15a) in the Frankenjura, Germany.

  • Utah Desert Gets New 5.12+ Offwidth

    5/13/13 - Pamela Pack and Patrick Kingsbury have established a new hard offwidth route in Indian Creek, Utah: Soul Assassin (5.12+ R, four pitches).

  • Arizona Climber Found Dead from Bee Stings

    5/9/13 - On April 6, a group of climbers found a man hanging in climbing gear from a cliff on Mt. Hopkins in Santa Rita Mountains, south of Tucson, Arizona.

  • Climbing to be Banned at Castle Rocks, Idaho

    5/2/13 - On April 17, the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho proposed permanently banning climbing on 400 acres of the Castle Rock Interagency Recreation Area. This does not affect the neighboring and much larger City of Rocks.
