I got a call at the beginning of February from my good buddy Andy Salo telling me that he and THE Paul Jung were psyched to come down for the Chalky Dreams Bouldering Competition, which I host at Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover, AL. Salo asked if he could bring his friend Tomás Donoso down to stay at the house and take some photos during the comp. Salo claimed Tomás was a photographer who really knew how to capture good shots. Any friend of Andy’s is a friend of mine. Salo and I have one major thing in common—WE KEEP IT REAL SON! So I told him to bring it.

Growing up in the South I came from a school of hard knocks where spraying and access issues are big problems. Needless to say I had my reserves about a “professional photographer” coming Down Here and wanting to take pics. I guess everywhere you go there is jealousy and haters, but Down Here the ignorant fast’ll lynch you! Just ask my fellow climbers Joe Kinder and Chris Sierzant (I got yall’s backs homies). Like all of my good buddies I climb with, I don’t like to take climbing too seriously. Safety first, that’s not what I’m referring to; what I mean is that I’m repulsed by climbers (or anyone for that matter) who have elitist attitudes. Climbing is all about fun and adventure. Period.

I got a call back in March from Henry Barber who told me that he was coming to Chattanooga for some consulting work, and that he wanted to try and get out climbing. If you don’t know who Henry Barber is than “you bettah aks somebody!” He told me that he had been to a couple of areas here in years past but would be psyched to check out anything that he hadn’t seen yet. Henry and I have one major thing in common—yep, you guessed it, WE KEEP IT REAL SON! So I told him to bring it.

Henry still climbs true to himself and the style of his era. He still wraps some webbing around his waste for a harness, and still loves to trad climb. My new friend Tomás grew up hearing all about Henry in New England so I asked if he wanted to join Henry and I climbing for the afternoon. It’s always a pleasure to hang out with Henry. He is a barrel of laughs, and has stories that anyone would love to hear. Thanks for making our day Henry, and thanks for everything you’ve done for climbing!

Well the “1st quarter of 2009” has been an absolute blasty blast. The world is ever changing and always spinning. It seems if you don’t jump on you’ll be left behind. The bouldering season is wrapping up down here in the Deep South. The temps are rising. So I guess I’ll start scaring myself on a rope again. And when it gets too hot I’ll be looking forward to getting back out in the lakes and rivers for some high quality Deep Water Soloing and Water Bouldering.

To my new buddy Tomás: thanks for sharing your view of the world and your photography with all of us. Keep fighting the good fight, and keep eating the cage free chickens and eggs…someone’s gotta do it.

Stay up,

-Lee
