EVENTS Fort William Mountain Festival
A celebration of mountain culture on February 11-15, 2010 - Although the full details of the program for the 2010 Fort William Mountain Festival, now in it's ninth year, are yet to be announced organizers have promised a five day feast of lectures, workshops and films for residents and visitors who want to learn about and celebrate mountain culture; during the best winter walking and climbing conditions of the year.
 
The AscenDance Project
AscenDance Project is a new company founded in January of 2006 by German born performance artist and rock climber Isabel von Rittberg to create work that explores the aesthetics of climbing. Performing entirely without the use of ropes, their work exhibits strength and grace enhanced by the effects of gravity on the dancers and their ability to overcome it. Check it out from March 5-14th at The Ashby Stage in Berkeley, CA.
 
2010 Chandler Mountain Challenge - Bouldering Comp Weekend
The 3rd Annual Chandler Mountain Challenge, a bouldering competition for all abilities at Horse Pens 40, AL, will be presented by Solid Rock – Climbers for Christ on Saturday, February 6th, 2010. The event will be a benefit for Climb-up So Kids Can Grow-up which is a non-profit that provides medicine for children with aids in Africa.
 
ROCK STEADY 5 - CLIMBING COMPETITION
Rock Steady 5, "Staying Alive" is Lakewood Colorado's fifth annual rock climbing competition hosted at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center on February 6th, 2010. In 1936, Nazi propaganda urges German Alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif, the Eiger, bringing two reluctant climbers, Toni Kurz (BENNO FÜRMANN) and Andi Hinterstoisser (FLORIAN LUKAS), to begin their daring ascent and attempt to scale the infamous rock face, often called the Murder Wall.
 
The Disciples of Gill - Bouldering Film Retrospective at Neptune Mountaineering
A presentation brought to you by Pat Ament on January 28 at 7 p.m. - In the 1960’s there was a small sub-culture of climbers who went against the traditional mountaineering mentality. Headed by John Gill, a few climbers devoted themselves to bouldering and turned it into a kind of gymnastic art. Pat Ament’s film tells the story of those beginnings, that golden age of bouldering, yet in a tender, nostalgic way.
 
Successful conclusion to first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship
The first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship has been concluded in Saas Grund, Switzerland on January 16th, 2010. The men's overall winner was Russia's Alexey Iakovlev. His compatriot, Liubov Mikryukova, took top honors among the young women. The Swiss team also did well. Go here for more results.

2010 Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival
Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival features the Cold Faces and Wild Spaces of Canadian Adventure Filmmakers as they seek out Personal Journeys of Endurance, Adrenaline and Mosquitoes, January 22 – 29, 2010. Canadian filmmakers have once again traveled to the far corners of the globe and to their own backyards to seek out and document the wild adventures of adrenaline seekers, endurance athletes and solitary paddlers.
 
Ice Climbing World Cup in Kirov, Russia
Last year’s overall winner, Austria’s Markus Bendler, has proven he is still the man to beat on the Ice Climbing World Cup circuit. Bendler took first place in the challenging Lead competition this weekend (January 7- 9, 2010) in Kirov, Russia. For the women, Italy’s Angelika Rainer came first, letting the world know she is ready to challenge for the overall top spot, after finishing second in 2009.
 
ICE Climbing Ecrins 2010
France's Ice Climbing Ecrins celebrates 20 years and has become a premiere location for extreme winter sports. Uniting ice-climbing amateurs from all over the world, ‘ICE’ held in the unforgettable valleys of Freissinieres and Fournel, is today a key event for the most passionate of ice-climbers. This year's festival, held from January the 8th - 10th, will offer a wide range of activities including training workshops, ice-climbing initiations and expert level training. Pianos Rachados 2009 - A New Crack Climbing Event in Portugal
Portugal climbing is best known for its excellent limestone cliffs next to the ocean, providing hard, overhanging sport routes, but not its trad climbing... But now, near to Lisbon, south of the surfing mecca, Ericeira, an outstandingly gorgeous cliff of black basalt with perfect splitter cracks was recently discovered. The place might remind you of UK's Peak District with exuberant evergreen shrubs and gray to black rock.
 
MetroRock's Dark Horse Series - Event 2
Continuing the recent progression of world class bouldering competitions in the NorthEast, MetroRock just finished the second stop of its four comp Dark Horse Series. On December 12th, over 200 competitors and spectators showed up to compete for the Dark Horse title. The top six competitors in each Open category advanced to finals in the evening to battle over the $1,100 cash purse. 
 
SuperTopo Auction to Benefit Access Fund
The 2008 SuperTopo Charity Auctions raised over $10,000 for climbing non-profits and Central Asia Institute. In 2009, as you can imagine, has been much harder to get to that number. BUT, that wont stop me from trying with one last auction for 2009 with all the proceeds benefiting the Access Fund.
 
The 2009 Triple Crown Bouldering Series
The biggest and most bodacious outdoor boulder series is back again - for the 7th time with two of the three events now in the books: Hound Ears in Boone, NC and Horse Pens-40 in Steele, AL. The grand finale will conclude the series at the Stone Fort near Chattanooga, TN on December 5th. The Triple Crown is dedicated to maintaining climbing access by supporting the Southeastern Climbers' Coalition and The Carolina Climbers' Coalition. 2009 Yangshuo Climbing Festival
Following last year’s inaugural event, the Second Annual Yangshuo Climbing Festival, hosted by The North Face and Black Diamond, will be held from November 13 to 15, 2009. Once again, the Festival will bring together local and international climbers in one of Asia’s top sport climbing locations.

International Day of Climate Action Celebrated at California's Phantom Spires
350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis — the solutions that science and justice demand. On 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5200 events around the world, people gathered to call for action on the climate crisis.

On November 7, 2009 the Gunks Climbers' Coalition will host a Vulgarian Poetry Slam Benefit Soirée to cover costs associated with the Rosendale Waterworks Bouldering Area Acquisition. The evening will include a Vulgarian poetry slam/spoken word by: Burt Angrist and weather permitting the evening will also include a special guest performance of fire by Mark-of-Fire of Gardiner NY.
